Response shooting day narrative

In today's shoot we decided to capture the performance narrative of the music video. This involved all three of our actors who we individually filmed their performance of their verses, which we repeated twice in order to gain more footage. After we filmed the chorus of the song with the three together where they performed in front of the camera. Initially it was rather difficult to for each member to act natural and smoothly and it took multiple attempts before they fell into the rhythm and beat of the music however they found it more natural to perform together than peforming solo. Simon Firth's 3 typologies theory was used here and we wanted to enhance the performance effect by using artificial lighting to help sell the performance impression for the music video. In order to do this we booked the drama hall which had stage lighting and used it to enhance each members presence. Overall it was a preductive shoot and after we have reviewed the footage taken we will either conduct a reshoot.

Response-Rehearsal

In early December we asked our actors to come in so that we could do a dry run of the performance and singing element for our music video. This was done so that we could all familiarise ourselves with the various cinematography as well as getting our actors perform comfortably among each other. This was beneficial as it would allow us to save time when it came to conduct our shoots allowing us to be more productive.

Updated Char profile- Debo

As our group decided to film we all agreed after some consideration that our actors were much better suited for different roles instead and so we decided to switch them around to create a more natural boy band. Vaughn was originally going to play Kendall, he is now playing Logan. He best suits the role of Logan because he is committed performer at making the audience believe the relationship between him and the girl is genuine. Montel was originally going to play Logan, he is now playing IYAZ. Montel suits the role of IYAZ better because he good at rapping, moreover his dress style is more urban and we believe that this fits the IYAZ character better. Lastly, Fran who was originally going to play IYAZ. Fran is quieter therefore we agreed that he would best suit Kendall in the music video.

Music Video Inspiration- Sharmin

The JLS music video inspired us because as a boy band, they had the element of performance which we could use in our music video. Simon Frith stated that music videos are characterised by three typologies. The performance typology is a common type where the group will singing while dancing. We liked the idea of having similar outfits to show the audience that they are in a group, making it easier for the target audience to recognise them. They are constructed by the industry to make out money from the audiences so it is important for audiences to recognise the boy band and sell the video.

Response to Digipak Ideas

The digipak brainstorm here was the first attempt at getting down and arranging our ideas for our product digipak. We after discussed what we all believed would work before finally agreeing with certain aspects which we wanted in the final product such as natural and complementary colours and content. Although it was a just an attempt I feel that it was really productive because we'd all agreed on a goal and started making steps to achieve it.

Change in song choice- If i ruled the world

We decided to change the music video song from 'wherever you are' to ' If I Ruled the World'. We annotated both to see which ideas were the most viable to create and we asked our target audience their preference out of the two songs. In conclusion the research we gathered and our ideas displayed indicated that "If I Ruled the World" was a stronger contender.

Response to Lauren's Video Moodboard

Viewing Lauren's moodboard which consisted pop music I saw that all these shots had the stars were positioned so that the lighting focused on the stars to indicate that they were the focus. Additionally the vast majority of the images had light colours and also colours that complemented each other to look visually appealing. The images which consisted of groups I saw that the camera captured the main stars together where they were wearing different yet similar colour clothing which we could also think about when dressing up our band members for our music video. The music video also applied the rule of thirds for when they performed a close up on the star giving us a good example of the effect of the rule of thirds.

Response to Website Moodboard

When evaluating all the websites which I picked out I can see that the vast majority of them contained a very simple layout that was well designed and yet easy to navigate through. Additionally I also learnt that good websites use a consistent complementary colour theme for all their products such as digipaks and website, in a few cases these colours were recognisable as they were the star's theme colour. Applying the findings of the various websites to our own, a simple layout appears to be the most ideal as it allows the audience to view various products and information without it appearing to be clustered and unorganised. In application to the colour theme we can see that certain colours can signify different things and so it is important that we get the colour theme right because we will also use the same colour theme for the Digipak.

Moodboard Digipak- Debo

Here I looked and analysed various different websites before making a note of my personal favourites and compiling them as a collage. What I liked about them was that they had nice appropriate consistent colours in their theme, similar and consistent font for titles, social media update links that inform the viewers of trending things which the sites were involved with. All these provide the users with a more engaging website as long as with more content.

Response to Target Audience

As we were tasked to create a pop music video which is catered for the younger demographic I believe it would be most suitable to add recognisable aspects that are stereotypically associated youth such as Vines, Facebook. I believe integrating familiar aspects within the music video would further tailor it to the young audience.

Response to Marina Digipak

In this digipak cover the pop star Marina is purposely positioned to be the main focus as she appears in 3 of the 4 parts of the cover. Additionally she is in a similar position in two of them, one where she stares intensely into the camera that attracts the viewers gaze which is effective as it attempts to makes a personal connection to the viewer/ customer making them want to but the product. Her hair is captured in motion with all 3 of the images which signifies that she is a free, active and happy individual and her music is a lighter tone.

Deconstruction of Pop Video- Roar by Katy Perry

In this pop video I reconstructed I noticed that the large majority of Katy Perry music videos are Narrative based additionally in these videos the star Katy Perry is the the main character in the most of the narrative music videos. This suggests that much of Katy Perry's music videos may reflect her life and her struggles increasing her relation with her audience because it shows that has the similar issues to a normal person.

Response to Lads on Cam

This task was not as simple as I previously anticipated, as I had already used the editing program Final Cut Express I believed it would be a rather straightforward. However at the very start we found that although we believed that we had enough of the footage we ended up running out of footage to put in the video. We decided in order to mend the issue we decided to reuse some pieces of footage using a variety of different effects to hide the fact that it was the same footage. These include cutting, trimming, some effects and moving a video to be upside down which I had not used before in my previous video projects. One major thing which I also learnt what not to do quickly was when shooting Elijahn, Chris, Amil was when trying to imitate the dolly cam movement I had to bend my knees and move as smoothly as I could to achieve a fluid movement from right to left and vice versa, however for our final music video I plan on finding a way to making a more effective equipment to perform better quality camera movement.

Preliminary Task - Lads on Cam

This is a quick video exercise that three others and I created. This was intended to be a rough shoot which we would later improve by creating a simple video while sync it with basic music to facilitate the feel.

My Favourite Pop Music Video- YOLO by the Lonely Island

One of the reasons why YOLO by theLonelyIsland is one of my favourite pop videos because it incorporates all the classic pop videos which people love to see and then mock a popular internet meme and later a cultural phenomenon. They mock the silly idea of society using the term to encourage irresponsible behaviour by creating a similar type of video which generated the internet meme. Another reason why it’s my personal favourite music videos is because of it firstly starts off as a normal YOLO song then it they change the term of the song to You Oughta Look Out. By creating a typical pop music video which incorporates all the typical conventions that the audience loves and then blow the term of YOLO out of proportion they illustrate how silly it is for to society react and act out words from a song and those who use the term YOLO so casually.
